We Don’t Unlove Them — We Just Learn to Carry the Love Quietly

When someone we deeply love walks away — or takes a path that no longer includes us — it leaves an ache that words struggle to soothe. There’s a silence that settles where laughter used to live, a hollow rhythm in routines that once held meaning. Conversations go unsaid. Plans unravel. And well-meaning voices say,

“You’ll move on. You’ll forget. You’ll find someone else.”

But the truth is: we don’t really unlove them. What we do… is learn to survive the absence.

We grow around the grief — like ivy wrapping gently around the outline of what used to be. We learn to live, not because we’ve let go of the love, but because we’ve learned how to carry it differently.

We fold it into the quiet. Not to bury it, but to blunt its sharpness.

Some days it still slips through — in a song, in a scent, in a laugh that echoes too closely. In those moments, you're transported — not back to pain, but to a tenderness that once was. And for a second, they’re here again. Real. Warm. Known.

Because love like that doesn’t disappear. It just softens. It whispers instead of shouts. Less visible, but still present — pulsing gently beneath the surface of who we’ve become.

So we go on. Not having unloved them, but having accepted that love doesn’t always end with goodbye —it just finds quieter ways to stay.

We learn to live not without them, but beside the memory of them —carrying their absence like a folded letter we’ll never send. Still loving them… just more silently.

As Imam Al-Ghazali beautifully said:

“Know that the reality of love is not to demand anything from the beloved, but to give them the best of what you have.”

Even when they’re no longer near, Islam teaches us that sincere love is never wasted. If it was real, it remains — not as attachment, but as something sacred between you and Allah. Through patience, silent prayer, and surrender to His wisdom, that quiet love continues… and so do we.
